Birth name Francisco de Jaso y Azpilicueta; Navarrese Catholic preacher and missionary, co-founder of the Society of Jesus. The first Catholic missionary to attempt the evangelisation of the peoples of South and East Asia. He was also the founder of the Jesuit overseas missions and the first missionary from among the Jesuits. In Latin Horatius Torsellinus, Italian historian, classical philologist and man of letters. He was born in Rome. In 1545 he entered the Jesuit order. He taught literature at the Roman College for twenty years. Later he was entrusted with the direction of the Jesuit seminary in Rome, and subsequently worked in Florence and Loreto. He wrote several historical works, including a biography of the founder of the Society of Jesus, St. Francis Xavier.
